Gavin Templeton, our Head of Sustainable Finance, was among the speakers at the third China Social Investment Forum (China SIF) Annual Conference in Beijing last week.

Given that the focus of the conference was ‘green finance’ it proved to be the ideal setting for the official launch of the Chinese version of our Green Investment Handbook. The handbook is our ‘guide to doing green at the UK Green Investment Bank’ and sets out the tools we use to assess, monitor and report the green impact of every investment we make.

Gavin was joined at the launch by Jiao Xiaoping, Deputy Director General of China Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Fund, who said that the handbook will “help to contribute to low carbon development in China”.

The launch was also welcomed by Ma Jun, Chief Economist at the People’s Bank of China’s Research Bureau and Director, Green Finance Committee of China Society of Finance and Banking, who noted that the translation was one of the commitments made during a recent UK Government trade mission to China.

Following the launch, Gavin oversaw the training of consultants from three local environmental consultancies on the handbook’s two core sections – risk control and impact assessment.

He also visited Jiangsu, an area rich in wind energy resources, where he participated in a roundtable discussion with representatives of the province’s Environmental Protection Department.

Gavin Templeton, Head of Sustainable Finance, Green Investment Bank, said:

Financiers all over the world are waking up to the fact that it is possible to make profitable green investments – the promotion of our methods in China is further proof of that. We are confident that our counterparts in China will find the handbook instructive and hope that it helps the country meet the ambitious carbon reduction targets it has set ahead of the Paris climate change conference.
