Backing public and private sector
energy efficiency programmes

We have backed renewable energy projects with a wide range of partners and technologies. We have created a new product, the 'Green Loan', specifically designed to help local authorities make the switch to low energy streetlights and built a programme focused on NHS energy efficiency.

In response to the early-stage and fragmented nature of the UK’s energy efficiency financing market, our investment strategy has focused on developing financing products for three sets of customers: project hosts such as local authorities, the NHS and commercial and industrial partners; project developers such as energy services companies and utilities; and, financial services companies that finance projects and for whom our capital or expertise can help expand their business.

Over the last year, we have worked with a number of pathfinder organisations in each of these sectors to develop financial products that can help accelerate the development of the market.

Our fund managers and us are both focused on a broad-range of technologies that reduce energy consumption and/or emissions.

Typically these are found in four types of projects:

  • Building retrofits (e.g. lighting, insulation, glazing)
  • Onsite generation (e.g. CHP, renewable heat, heat pumps)
  • Industrial process (e.g. motors, pumps, kilns)
  • Infrastructure (e.g. street lighting, heat networks, transport, smart meters)

Individual projects can range from single technology (e.g. street lighting) to multiple technologies (e.g. large industrial retrofit including building retrofit, onsite generation and industrial process).
